Ringing In Ears
That awful ringing in the ears that won’t go away is commonly known as tinnitus.
Tinnitus can be defined as a sound or noise heard in one or both of the ears without the existence of any external noise source.
The sound therefore, originates from within the ear & can be in the form of a ringing, buzzing, roaring, hissing or whistling inside the ears.
Furthermore there doesn’t appear to be any obvious cause of these noises, which can be for a brief period or even permanent, but occurs due to the brain misunderstanding signals generated by the nerves in the ear.
Is Tinnitus a Serious Condition?
Although tinnitus is a somewhat irritating & annoying condition it doesn’t appear to be a sign of anything serious that needs urgent attention although it can affect concentration, cause insomnia & anxiety.
However if it is left untreated it is highly possible that it will get worse & more intense with age.
Conversely if treated, sufferers can experience huge relief from their tinnitus & ringing in the ears.
In the January / February 2014 issue of ENT and Audiology News, a special section on tinnitus was commissioned.
